How to create your own working nook

Today I love…

This beautiful, creative space… It’s actually a DIY project from Dutch magazine VT Wonen and you can find the tutorial to create this little nook here. The instructions are in Dutch but if you are using Google Chrome, you can activate an add-on (Google Translate) in the tool bar to translate automatically pages written in a different language (very useful!). They’ve used Light Blue No 22 by Farrow & Ball, which I think, looks really pretty and summery. What do you think? It is a colour I wouldn’t usually think of using as I tend to go for hues of whites and greys (see our bedroom) but I really like how it softly contrasts with the rest of the room in white. It’s always nice to work from a space filled with natural light, isn’t it!? I had set up an office in one of the spare rooms in our home in France but most days I work from the dining table in our lounge, because the room is filled with natural light. Ideally, at some point, I would …

A white industrial kitchen with Smeg appliances

A white industrial kitchen with Smeg appliances

I’ve always loved white kitchens. If I was a Property Developper or an Architect (my preferred choice) and I had plenty of houses to renovate, I would have fun trying different things. Maybe I will start by fitting a plywood kitchen or a gorgeous grey kitchen or even attempting to fit one with pale green units like this one in a beautiful Swedish flat. However, when it comes to living with it day in day out, a white kitchen will always be my first choice. How about you!? The high ceiling of this kitchen reminds me of this white, airy kitchen designed by Arrhov Frick, the duo of Architects who converted a former meat factory into a block of 22 apartments. The one below is from Rye London, a daylight kitchen photography studio in East London. You can also rent the space for events and workshops. I always think it’s tricky to find good, natural-lit, airy venues for an event so it’s definitively one cool address to bookmark. But let’s talk appliances for a change… This SMEG dual fuel …

A beautiful old blacksmith studio renovated in Greece

A renovated blacksmith studio in Greece

I have a thing for high ceilings, don’t you? I also very much love plywood or any architectural buildings and dwellings made out of wood for that matter and if you haven’t seen my recent post, check this beautiful minimalist kitchen. This gorgeous space above, is an old blacksmith studio built in 1930 renovated by Dorte Mandrup-Poulsen, Louis Becker and Jens Thomas Arnfred, three Danish Architects who happen to be friends too. Eight years ago, they decided to buy this old blacksmith’s warehouse on the Greek island of Lesbos so they could all go on holidays together with their respective families, isn’t this wonderful!?

Inspiring place to eat in London: Story Deli Read on www.karinecandicekong.com

Story Deli | London

My favourite place to eat pizza in London is Story Deli because visually, I think it’s one of the most inspiring places to be. As a lover of white interiors, textures and vintage, Story Deli feels like a second home to me. Over the years, the Deli has moved around East London and is now located at the end of Bricklane on Bethnal Green Road. The new Story Deli is a lot more pared down than it used to be, like a more balanced, grown-up version, yet still so beautiful (you can glimpse the old one here). It has less tables than it used to have, the distressed white floorboards at the old location have been replaced by a concrete floor, the space has still heigh ceilings and as today was a nice day, I particularly enjoyed the natural light flooding from two large sky windows.

A relaxing, white, airy kitchen

The minimalist design, the white walls, the massive sky window to fill the room with natural light, the soothing combo of white and natural wood makes this kitchen one of my absolute favourites. From a design point of view, kitchens are my favourite room in a home and I’m absolutely loving everything about this white, airy kitchen. What do you think? This kitchen is from a block of 22 apartments built in a former meat factory by Swedish Architecture practice Arrhov Frick. Sadly I couldn’t find more pictures of the kitchen or the whole flat to share with you so we will have to make do with this sole photo and imagine how the rest of the flat could look like. The design of this kitchen is very simple but yet so efficient and works wonder in a small flat as we all as a warehouse type conversion. Subtle black touches are added throughout the room like this classic Vitra Eames house bird (available from John Lewis) sitting on top of the kitchen units. The square table and the chairs …

A stunning white & concrete loft in Eindhoven

In the recent years, European lofts have been given New-York lofts quite a run for their money. The last family loft featured here was hugely inspiring, packed with beautiful details and an amazing chandelier from Anthropologie. Today, I’m taking you to Eindhoven to visit Jason’s beautiful loft. An amazing 87 sqm loft space with 4.60 m high walls which proved to be a bit challenging to paint.

My next DIY challenge is….

Pimping up our kitchen units by Sunday evening! You can see how it currently looks there. In fact, nothing has changed since it was photographed by Edition Paumes for their London Family Style book last year but to be honest they shot the nice part of the kitchen (high glass ceilings, natural light, French door leading onto the garden). On the right hand side, things aren’t so good….Kitchen units are really old and Steve & I really can’t stand the ugly stone tiles on the floor. We had our hearts on a polished concrete floor to replace the tiles but we’ve been told that we will need to dig down quite deep for the company to pour enough concrete and achieve a lasting, hard-wearing look. So, I think we are going to settle for painted white floorboards a la Story Deli a few years back to achieve something between the kitchen of Li Edelkoort (below) this one by the owners of Balthazar’s Keuken, that has rocked my boat for some timeand ultimately this one (shot by Frederic …
